UC Photography Club President
At the beginning of the 2021 spring semester, I took over the role of the UC photography club president. UC Photography Club aims to bring together students across various disciplines who share a passion for photography. We conduct critiques of each other’s work and share tips and tricks to encourage love and appreciation for this art form. We are open to all majors and all skill levels!
As the photo club president, I am responsible for overseeing and delegating all aspects of the club. I work with the rest of the leadership team to make sure that the club is running smoothly and plan everything the club does. I finalize what the leadership team has discussed and then host and guide all meetings and events. I also am responsible for making sure our social media is running smoothly and that we are communicating needed information to club members. I am also responsible for managing the club’s email and coordinating opportunities with brands and community members.
This role meets the University Honors Program’s key competencies of community engagement, creativity, and leadership. It takes a great deal of creativity to be a photographer and craft a piece of art. But it also takes creativity to plan what the club will be doing. We mostly have a weekly photo challenge prompt, and then discuss and critique each other’s photographs at meetings. Creativity is used to come up with what the prompt for each week will be. This role is involved with the community by bringing together students from across the university to form the club. We have members from every college within the university. We also engage with the community outside of UC by working with members of the community to fulfill their photography needs. Members of the club have worked with individuals taking portraits, and wedding photographs. As well as working with multiple brands to take photographs for events, campaigns, and products. As the president of the club, I have a key leadership role to make sure that the club is running smoothly.
Through this role, I grew confidence in a leadership role. At first, I was nervous about leading meetings and coordinating different club activities. After time I learned that I was being over-critical of myself and that the work I was doing was helping revive the club and lead to our success. By developing this confidence, I also was more comfortable talking in front of groups during presentations. This will be helpful in my eventual career in the film industry where I must share my ideas and opinions in front of a group. This role also helped me learn how to delegate different tasks. I am very particular about how things are done and want everything I present to be perfect. I learned that I didn’t have to do everything myself and that I can trust my team to perform well.
As the president of the photography club, I grew as an individual. I was able to build my confidence and lead a group. I am known that what I am doing is helping the club be successful in our mission.
